Fall is the season of the silk scarf, with a jazzy or non-directional print. The snood is also one of the hottest winter looks; watch this trend take off as it gets cold
If there’s one thing that is set to keep you warm this winter, it’s a woollen snood. Grab one this fall, as snoods are set to be one of the key looks in fashion accessories for the season. The snood, a hat, scarf and hood rolled into one is worn over the head and neck. Stella McCartney began featuring them in her fall collection, whilst Marc Jacobs showcased some Medieval looks on the runway, with his hooded outfits too. In its online newsletter of 21 September entitles “7 Fast Fall Tips,” online high-fashion store Net-A-Porter calls this look “clever and on-trend. It features what it set to be the most popular snood of the season, Stella McCartney’s gray striped snood, a mere snip at £145! Traditional SnoodsTraditional snoods are a type of hairnet designed to hold and cover the hair. It started in medieval times and was originally made from knotted lace. It was later made from crocheted yarns and also evolved into the winter wool ones we see today. In the 1920s a traditional snood was often worn by the bride at her wedding, and today sometimes still worn as a wedding hair piece or for formal occasions. This fall's fashionable snoods are made from wool and are found in a multitude of colors. In addition to providing warmth, it can protect the hair from the elements. It is also the perfect antidote for a bad hair day! How to Wear a SnoodYou’ll see this season’s snood worn in several ways. In addition to a head and hair covering, you can wear it hanging loose around your neck. Snood dresses are another feature of fall, with necklines much baggier than a cowl neck – more Middle Ages in tone, in keeping with the medieval trend. Online store Asos features a number of snoods from traditional headcoverings to a snood dress in the style of Nicole Ritchie. A snood is normally worn at the middle of the head, allowing parts of your fringe showing. A pin or ribbon accessory can be used to hold it in place, so it does not keep slipping down. Printed Silk Scarves for Fall 2008Silk scarves also make a welcome return to the runways for fall. Feminine and sophisticated, the trick to being trendy is to wear them in imaginative ways. You can tie one around the handle of your handbag, or wear it as a headband, with the ends loosely hanging over your front shoulder. One other alternative is to wear a long scarf wrapped around your head in the style of a snood. On of the most popular on-trend looks is to wear a patterned scarf tied-up in a bow over sweaters and under jackets and blazers.
