If you want to get ahead in the style stakes this winter, then don't get a hat, get a beret! Berets are big hits this season and so are slouchy snoods.

This winter, show off your fun side with a jaunty beret, or slip on a stylish snood which will keep you warm-as-toast. However, berets in particular prove one of the trickiest fashion challenges when it comes to carrying them off.

Who is Wearing a Beret?

The Britain's "first lady" Sarah Brown (wife of Prime Minister Gordon Brown) wowed the public with her jaunty purple beret, which she wore to the State Opening of Parliament in early December. Sarah Brown's beret cost just £7.00 from New Look but looked stylish and modern, with the splash of this season's right-on-trend purple lifting the rest of her outfit.

Recently, a long line of celebrity A-listers have been seen sporting a beret, from Beyoncé, Sienna Miller, Cameron Diaz, Madonna to Kylie Minogue.

How to Wear a Beret

According to the Daily Mail’s, December 5th article “After Sarah Brown’s Hat Trick, the do’s and don’t of carrying off the trickiest fashion challenge — the beret," wearing a beret says to things – a woman does not take herself too seriously and “although you might not wear a hat, you are not quite dead yet.”

The best thing about wearing a beret, apart from giving the impression that you have a sense of fun, is that it suits most face shapes and transcends all age groups. However, the beret can prove a fashion disaster if not worn with aplomb!

For a touch of Parisienne Left-Bank chic, the perfect position for a beret to sit, according to the Liz Jones, of the Mail, is squarely on the forehead and sloping back. If it’s worn too far to the back of the head, it looks like a shower cap and too far forward looks like a tea cosy. Puff it up at the top and you’ll look like a Victorian kitchen maid and too over-to-one side (Frank Spencer-style) is so not-in-vogue.

However, choosing how to wear it is very much a matter of taste. Experiment with jaunty angles and if it feels right for you, then go for it!

What is a Snood?

For something that gives a little more coverage and keeps you warm-as-toast this winter, then try a snood. Basically a woollen hood, this covers both the head, ears and neck and is a hot fashion accessory for the season.

The brighter and bolder the color, the more on-trend it is. In addition to providing warmth, it is also the perfect antidote for a bad hair day! A snood can also be worn loosely around the neck, scarf-style.

The Ideal Christmas Gift?

These reasonably priced fashion accessories are ideal Christmas gifts, that are both functional and fashionable.
